Allen Matheson's

Cakewalk Compositions

The stuff on this page represents a few of my attempts at songwriting; I used Cakewalk 1.04 (Apprentice) and 8.04 (Express). Each of the songs were developed entirely using a mouse and computer keyboard (I'm not into Carpal-Tunnel-self-mutilation, I just don't have a MIDI controller keyboard).

Some of these are available as RealAudio files (download a RealAudio player if you'd like). Better yet, listen to the mp3 versions under the Windows Media Player, Winamp, or your favorite-flavored player. You can download all the Cakewalk WRK files on this page if you'd like. You'll need Cakewalk if you want the WRK files to work.

Cakewalk / General MIDI Instruments test

Not really a composition...
After several frustrating sessions trying to listen to and compare the different instruments in Cakewalk (I'm only allowed to play 16 at a time since I don't have AWE 32), I put together this WRK file that plays all 128 General MIDI instruments, one note per instrument. The first 16 are played as-is through the first 16 channels, and the remaining 112 are played in sets of 16 channels, by patching each channel to the proper instrument. During play, you can test the range (scale) of a particular instrument by pausing the play during the measure in which the instrument is playing, then simply go to the Piano Roll view for that instrument and test it out.
