Entrance to the Stanley hotel in Estes Park, Colorado, 6 miles from the Rocky Mountain National Park; the hotel is on the right side of this image. This grand hotel was built in 1909 by F.O. Stanley (better known for the Stanley Steamer he helped create). In October 1974, Stephen King was spending a weekend at this hotel when he was inspired to write The Shining. This, his third novel, cemented King's role as a horror novelist and was also the basis for a well-known Stanley Kubrick film by the same name. Although the Stanley didn't find a place in the Kubrick movie, Stephen King returned to the hotel in 1996 to film and direct a six hour remake of The Shining. The Stanley was also filmed as "The Danbury Hotel" for the final quarter of the movie Dumb and Dumber. |
