This is the Conrail Bridge (also known as the Iron Curtain Bridge and Bridge No. 1), a railway trestle near The Flats in Cleveland, Ohio. Built in 1947, this Vertical Lift Bridge spans the mouth of the Cuyahoga River, connecting the river's eastern shore (right) to the railyards of Whiskey Island (left). It is raised with cables and counterweights to a height of 98 feet and it is 265 feet long. The counterweights are several ton steel and concrete slabs that lower to block off the railway tracks on either shore. The bridge is in the raised position in this photo.
