The United States Capitol building in Washington, D.C. (dome and East front), as viewed from the northeast at night. Begun in 1793, the Capitol building has been built, burnt, rebuilt, extended, and restored. Construction on the dome began in 1857, and was completed in 1863 when the Statue of Freedom was placed on top of the dome.
